Call for Participants for the 2024-2025 seminar
We would like to invite faculty to participate in the NEH Seminar: Oral History in Interdisciplinary Community College Pedagogy that will be run through CTL. The seminar will have faculty explore how oral history practices can help recenter their teaching practices to the vantage points of individuals and communities of minority groups whose perspectives are often marginalized in published materials and media. We are particularly interested in participation from faculty in non-history disciplines, where the oral history has not been commonly adopted in teaching and research.

Stipend: All participants will receive a $1,000 stipend. The seminar is open to both full-time and part-time faculty.

Oral History Talk: Natalie Milbort (11/16/2023)
Oral History in Interdisciplinary Community College Pedagogy: Centering the Community in the Classroom (https://oralhistory.commons.gc.cuny.edu) is funded by the National Endowment of Humanities (NEH) for 2023-2025 to introduce oral history techniques to community college faculty’s pedagogical practices. The project is pleased to announce its first invited talk by Natalie Milbrodt, Queens Memory Project & Queens Library, on Thursday, November 16, 2023.

Abstract: Natalie Milbort will be introducing participants to the Queens Memory Project and leading a discussion on how to design and manage oral history projects. The primary focus of the talk will be on establishing a transparent project that respects the interviewees and considers long-term access to the interviews. This talk will be of interest to anyone interested in integrating Queens/neighborhood history or interviews into their pedagogy.

Looking for a part-time research assistant for the NEH Oral History project ($25/hour; deadline on 9/29/2023)
“Oral History in Interdisciplinary Community College Pedagogy: Centering the Community in the Classroom” is an NEH-funded project led by multidisciplinary researchers at LaGuardia Community College. We are currently looking for a part-time research assistant (RA) who will support the project team to administer the project. The project will begin in September 2023 until June 2025. The expected work hours are 12.5 hours per week at the pay rate of $25 per hour during the 9-month academic year. We are looking for someone flexible in their work as tasks may include supporting faculty in conducting oral history interviews, processing and editing video, making interviews available online, etc. Depending on how much support faculty require, the RA may also conduct and process oral history interviews for the project leaders.
This position can be partially remote with an expectation of “in person” time as needed to work with faculty, conduct interviews, or attend select seminar sessions.

- Interested in oral history and/or interview-based qualitative research.
- BA or MA/MLS students with interest in oral history and archival studies. Current LaGuardia students are encouraged to apply.
Tasks and duties: (experience not necessary)
- Assist seminar participants and organizers in conducting oral history interviews.
- Assist seminar participants in finding and selecting already published oral history projects.
- Assist seminar participants with technical support relating to oral history interviews
- Planning oral history interviews/projects
- Conducting oral history interviews
- Metadata description and editing transcripts
- Publishing interviews online
- Miscellaneous administrative duties and upkeep of seminar’s website
- Good communication skills

Making it here Women in New York City Politics Project
Molly Rosner, one of the co-project director of the Oral History in Interdisciplinary Community College Pedagogy, is leading another project honoring the first-ever female majority in the history of New York City Council. The project has been collaborating with faculty for other oral history projects and LaGuardia students are researching and interviewing local leaders about their careers and platforms.
These interviews are being preserved in the Archives’ collections and excerpted on a website: https://www.laguardiawagnerarchive.lagcc.cuny.edu/EdPrograms/Women_in_Government.aspx.
Centering the Community in the Classroom through NEH Grant ($150,000 for 2023-2025)
The National Endowment for the Humanities has awarded a $150,000 grant for “Oral History in Interdisciplinary Community College Pedagogy: Centering the Community in the Classroom.” Led by Thomas Cleary (Library; PI), Molly Rosner (LaGuardia and Wagner Archives), and Tomonori Nagano (Education & Language Acquisition), aims to empower faculty to bring oral history interviews into their own pedagogical practices through a series of year-long workshops. The faculty will engage in interviewing, deep listening, and analysis of oral history materials in their disciplines. Through this engagement, the faculty will explore how oral history practices can help re-center their teaching practices to the vantage points of individuals and communities of minority groups whose perspectives are often marginalized in published materials and media. The first of seven faculty seminar meeting will take place in September 2023.
